South Africa, which has more than 2500 confirmed coronavirus cases with more than 34 deaths, extended its lockdown period by two weeks until 30 April.

In Namibia, President Hage Geingob announced earlier this week that the lockdown period will be extended at the end of the current one starting from 17 April to 4 May. The new lockdown, as opposed to the initial, is for the whole country.

In Botswana, parliament approved President Mokgweetsi Masisi’s request for a six-month State of Public Emergency purely for purposes of combating the Covid-19 pandemic.

While other SADC countries are making unpopular decisions to curb the spread of the virus, Tanzania, whose President John Magufuli is the chairperson of SADC, has decided against closing its borders saying that doing so would be catastrophic to the economy.

Tanzania is the only country in SADC whose economy is growing above 7% regional threshold.
